Have you tried manually downloading it from windows update catalogue and installing it? I noticed it is very large over a gig. If you have already tried that , perhaps do a reboot on the server and then attempt the installation. Restoring the server would be worst case scenario and I would imagine unsatisfactory outcome.
I see some other posts of people having issues installing this particular update on some Server VMs. We have requested a ticket to be opened with Microsoft through our partner to see if any suggestions come back from them that will work. We'd like to avoid rebuilding the VMs if at all possible. This isn't just one server, it's several all throwing the same error.
I will try standing one up fresh and testing the patch just out of curiosity though. I've been seeing problems with these updates ever since Windows was released. Updates randomly fail and roll back on healthy servers. Try again next month and the updates may succeed on the failing servers while the servers that were OK last month may fail on the new updates.
Post a query in these forums and get the same kind of advice that's been posted in these forums for years implying that there is something wrong with your installation but the advice is way off mark. Microsoft has a serious problem with these updates and ongoing issues with the overall Windows update process that go back many years. I've been in environments where Microsoft support spent weeks trying to resolve an issues with updates on a particular server and eventually gave up and recommended that the server be reinstalled - that's pretty sad.
From my experience supporting Windows Server and dealing with Microsoft support over many years I can tell you that they really don't give a crap about this ongoing issue that we all waste many hours on. What they care about is you moving all of your data into their cloud. Well its all very well moving data to the cloud until you find out that your migration of your entire database to the cloud is about to be scrapped "Access web apps"!!
Months of wasted time developing and now having to develop an in house solution using. I've seen it with local servers too.. The problem is these updates are getting insanely large in size! This one's over a gig for goodness sakes For a security update?!
Same issue here with Windows Update for Windows Server , you never know what result you get. I make much effort to creat an master image with MDT by the book, and that do not help. We have also issue with this update kb , it takes 40 minutes or more to install and SCCM make timeout with error code 0x87DC.
